7 Pipe Bending Machine Questions I Wish I'd Asked (Before Wasting $1,200)

I work at Gardner Denver. We make compressors, not pipe fittings. But last year, a custom project forced me into the world of tubing benders, CNC pipe bending machines, HDPE pipe making machines, hydraulic expanders, and pipe cutting & chamfering. 1. Should I buy a combined machine or separate units?

I went back and forth between a combo pipe cutting & chamfering machine and two separate units for two weeks. The combo saved floor space. But when the cutter jammed, the whole line stopped. Separate units meant I could keep running. I chose separate. That single decision saved me from a production halt three months later. Moral: redundancy beats compactness in a production environment.

5. Is a hydraulic pipe expander necessary for most shops?

This worked for us, but our situation was specific: we needed to expand tube ends for a press-fit assembly on a 50-piece order. If you're only doing slip-fit connections, a hydraulic expander is overkill. The vendor who said 'honestly, you don't need our largest model — rent it first' earned my trust for everything else. Context matters.

6. Pipe cutting and chamfering: why I learned to do them together?

Had 24 hours to decide on a cutting method for a rush order. Normally I'd evaluate multiple tools. I grabbed a simple abrasive saw. The cut was rough. Then I needed a separate chamfering step — more time, more waste. In hindsight, I should have bought a pipe cutting and chamfering machine from the start. The combo unit would have paid for itself in that single order. Don't separate steps that belong together.

7. What's the real cost of a pipe bending machine (not just the price tag)?

The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength — here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else.
